Why FAQs are important for your website & SEO

People are constantly asking questions to improve their knowledge. By answering their questions, you are showing to Google that you are a reputable website as you are addressing and answering questions asked by the public. This, therefore, improves your chances of getting ranked higher on the SERPs. The main goal of adding FAQs on the website is to gain a ‘featured snippet’ on the SERP.

A featured snippet is a short section of text that appears near the top of the Google search that provides an answer to a particular question.

There are multiple Q&As in the featured snippet to provide users with a range of answers to questions relating to their search. As you can see from the sceenshot above, the question ‘What is the best car setup in F1 2021’ was answered with a list which is common for Google to use because it lists out the answer clearly.

How do I use FAQs for my website?

There are multiple ways of getting some FAQs that you can answer. I will cover the main 3 below:

  1. Search on Google and find a featured snippet with FAQs that relate to your business and answer those questions (much like the example above)
  2. Use online tools like answerthepublic.com which provide a range of questions relating to a certain topic and answer those questions
  3. If you are knowledgeable about your industry, consider questions that arise in your line of work and answer those. This is the best option because the questions that you will be answering may not be included in a featured snippet, meaning that you may be the first website to answer this question.

You have found questions, what now?

You have a list of FAQs (preferably 3-10) which is great but what now? To optimise your website SEO, you should ideally create an FAQ page where you will put your Q&As. (like this client website).

For each question, answer it below in a short method in order to improve the chances for the featured snippet. Google displays anwers in a few sentances or bullet points so try and consider these when answering the question. Try and highlight the main points of the answer to show Google the important parts of the answer.

Schema markup is extremely useful as it explains to Google what is on the page. Adding Schema markup to the FAQ page allows your chances of getting a featured snippet to increase. Read this article to learn more about Schema Markup.
