Back in September 2018, I wrote an article about “How EPIC GAMES got it so right with Fortnite battle royale“. I considered the success that Fortnite had since it was released as a free game. Back then, this was a scarce method within the video game shooting industry as profits were made on sales of the game, not micro-transactions.
However, since then, some of the most popular shooting games at the moment have followed EPIC GAMES by allowing users to play the game completely for free. Below are some of the most popular free-to-play shooting games:

Launched just over 2-years ago, Apex Legends has already made over $1 billion in profits.
You can see the success that these free-to-play games have received having been released after Fortnite in 2017. It is likely that releasing games for free is the meta for game companies now as the success others have achieved is something that they will want to aim for. The gaming industry is constantly preparing and adapting to current trends so it will be interesting to see how trends change in the future and how gaming companies adapt to the changes.
